As Joseph was a-walking He heard an angel sing.
This night shall be born our heavenly King

1. He neither shall be born in housen nor in hall,
Nor in the place of Pa-ra-dise, But in an ox 's stall

2. He neither shall be clothed in purple and pall,
But all in fair linen as wear babies all

3. He neither shall be rocked in silver and gold
But in a wooden cradle that rocks on the mould.

4. He neither shall be christened in white wine and red,
But in the fair spring water as we were christened.

This appears in Singing Together, Autumn 1966 edition.

Any indication of provenance for this one? There may be previous publisher details at the back of the pamphlet. This form of words occurs in a number of 19th century carol books, with slight variations; closest appears to be the set in Rimbault's Collection of Old Christmas Carols (1860) but I don't know if the tune is the same. Arrangements to different music, and with slightly variant words, appear credited to Charles Kingsley (he included the song in one or other of his books, but of course didn't write it, and it appears to have been set more than once by people who didn't realise that it was already a song with existing music).

Speaking of music, you might want to check the abc. I think the words may be wrongly spaced in the first two lines.

ABC fixed.

There is very little detail of the origin of this one. All it says on the back cover is:

Acknowledgement is due to the following

... J Curwen and Son for the words and music of 'Joseph and the Angel' ...

Versions of the following songs with accompaniments are available as below
... Joseph and the Angel Twelve Christmas Carols (CURWEN)

That would be Sir Richard Runciman Terry's Twelve Christmas Carols (London: J Curwen, 1912) then, I expect. I don't have access to it. It would be useful if you'd quote any publisher or other acknowledgements for Singing Together material, as in some cases it does help us trace a source.
