From Mary in Kentucky: Orientis Partibus, a medieval carol. Also, The Friendly Beasts, a hymn (one of a number) using a variant of the Orientis Partibus melody.

A quote from the Revels Songbook about Orientis Partibus: The "Song of the Ass," important in the early history of Western music, was sung during the Middle Ages as a processional at Sens, when a donkey was ridden into the Cathedral. The irrepressible popular humor of the Feast of Fools and similar mediaeval festivals is found in the carol's "braying" refrain, which was sung by the clergy. Orientis Partibus is in Mixolydian mode (with the flatted 7th). The Friendly Beasts is in a major key, 3/4 time. I found another hymn to the tune of Orientis Partibus at the Volkslieder site (http://ingeb.org) in 4/4 time. (search for orientis) The version in 4/4 time sounds more like the original, but I hear the similarity even in 3/4 time.

Correction to text: "... adventavit asinus ..." (came an ass) 1) vice "asirus" lege "asinus" 2) "adventavit" is all one word and thus needs hyphen between last two syllables Danger Dave
