Up the Raw, down the Raw,
Up the Raw, lass, eve'ry day,
For shape and colour, ma bonny hinny,
Thou bangs thy mother, ma canny bairn.

Black as a craw, ma bonny hinny,
Thou bangs them a', lass, ivry day,
Thou's a' clag candy, ma bonny hinny,
Thou's double japanded, my canny bairn.

Up the Raw, etc.

For hide an hue, ma, bonny hinny,
Thou bangs the craw, ma canny bairn,
Up the Raw, maw bonny hinny,
You bangs them a', ma canny bairn.

Up the Raw, etc.

Notes:

There a a number of discrepancies between the lyrics as supplied and those written alongside the music. 'Down the Raw' in the lyrics appears as another 'up the Raw' in the music, 'candy' becomes 'candied', 'every' becomes 'ivry' and so forth.

Thanks, nutty & masato. I'm out this evening, but I will bring the lyrics into line with the "Northumbrian Minstrelsy" version tomorrow, all being well.

I've checked it out and now understand the note I wrote originally. The music is printed with the chorus and first verse. Underneath this, the first verse and chorus is printed again along with the other verses. However, there are a number of small changes, as explained.
