Behold the lady bright and gay, good fortune and sweet charms, So scornfully I've thrown away into this booby's arms He swears if I don't wed with him as you shall understand He'll surely list for a soldier into some foreign land. Source: Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, Dec 1953 Notes: This song appears in an article entitled "Plough Plays in the East Midlands" by M.W. Barley, along with this note: "From Sourth Scarle Mr Holmes of Thurgardon, Notts, has preserved for us this tune used for the Lady's song." | ||

Here's a more complete verion (also sung) from the Farnsfield (Notts) play Here comes a lady bright and gay Misfortune and sweet charm I've been most scornfully thrown away Right out of my true lover's arms. I swear if I don't marry him I'll give him to understand I'll get another sweeter one And go into some foreign land. Now my lover's listed And joined the volunteers, I'll get another brighter one. And along with him I'll go :-) |
