Juda's Land

It was in Juda's land
By God's almighty hand
That Jesus Christ was born in the valley.

CHORUS:
In the valley,
In the valley,
That Jesus Christ was born in the valley.

'Twas by his mother's hand
He was wrapped in swaddling band
And in a manger laid in the valley.

CHORUS:
In the valley,
In the valley,
And in a manger laid in the valley.

Notes: Appalachian carol of unknown record in the folk song collection of the Hutchins Library, Berea College, Kentucky.

"In the Valley" on Kentucky Christmas Old and New -- Jean Ritchie, Family and Friends can be heard here.

Thanks Masato. This just may be my "find" for this year. I try to learn a new Christmas carol/song every year, and it seems to get harder and harder to find a new one.

I like the Tolkien quote: In every wood, in every Spring, there is a different green. Sometimes it's just our awareness that changes, and we "hear" a song that's always been there. This one is very familiar, but I never really paid any attention to it. Then, like you pointed out, it's right there on Jean's recording.

Mary, maybe the Village Carol Project that Dave mentioned could offer you a few new ones.

Thanks Jon. I think I checked them out last year. (And I was too cheap to order the materials...you can't hear them on the website. Being a "tune" person, I like to hear them first.) I may have to order some this year.
