O give me a cot in the land of the mountains, Secluded Marioneth who name I love well There let me abide amid torrents and fountains, That leap on the hill-side and spring in the dell O would I might ramble all day through the meadows Charmed by the soft murmurs of wandering bees Or listen while evening is casting its shadows To frolicking birds in the boughs of the trees Source: Singing Together, BBC Broadcasts to Schools, Summer Term, 1959 Notes: Welsh Folk song from 'Songs of the British Isles', J Curwen and Sons.

I know the tune as one played in sessions I went to in Wales. I remember it a bit differently though: X:1 T: Q:1/4=150 M:3/4 L:1/8 K:Dmaj |:(3ABc |d2 A2 F2 |D3 E F2 |G2 e2 ed | c2 A2 (3ABc |d2 A2 F2 |G3 A B2 |A2 d2 c2 | d4 :| de |f2 de fd |e2 cd ec | d2 Bc de | c2 A2 de |f2 de fd |e2 cd ec |d2 c2 B2 | A4 Bc |d2 A2 F2 |D3 E F2 |G2 e2 ed | c2 A2 (3ABc |d2 A2 F2 |G3 A B2 |A2 d2 c2 | d4 :

I am somewhat baffled by this one, I admit. I certainly know the tune, but did not recognise the words at all. I would not know the Welsh lyrics, but could possibly have heard them. The booklet is 'Summer Term 1959'; as I was born in September 1953 I would have been the first year of primary (after reception) when this was broadcast, and do remember the cover. On the other hand as far as I can tell I don't remember the songs (from the time - many if them I know, but possibly from later). I can't remember what happened to the booklets after the end of the term, so it is vaguely possible my brother or sister brought a copy home and I saw it there ...

While it doesn't mean there are not Welsh words, I'm pretty sure I've only heard it as a tune.

There are Welsh words to this song and if anyone could tell me what they are I'd be very grateful. |
