I was a-walking one morning at ease, A-viewing the leaves as they hung from the trees, They were all in full motion or appearing to be, And those that were wither'd, they fell from the tree. (Chorus) Then what is the life of a man, any more than the leaves, A man has his seasons, so why should he grieve; Even though in this wide world he appears bright and gay, Like the leaves we shall wither and soon fade away. Did you not see the leaves but a short time ago? They were all in full motion appearing to grow, When the frost came upon them and wither'd them all Then the rain came upon them and down they did fall. If you go down to yonder churchyard, many names there you'll see, Who have fallen from this world like the leaves from trees; Wjat with age and affliction upon us all, Like the leaves we will wither and down we shall fall. Interseting. Sort of makes me think of "The indespensible man" wich seems to be attributed Saxon N. White Kessinger, (C) 1959.

For some totally undeserved reason, I have a reputation for singing depressing songs that usually involve a death, or lots of death, or general decay. I've known this song for at least 30 years but decided I'd give it a go at this week's session.

OT but Funny with the depressing stuff, Dave, on my sad times, I can sing Tom Waits "time", as a song to cry myself out of it! Love a song by a guy called Ian Bowley - about a split up - What shall we drink to night - I'll drink to the Lassie that should have. It is copyrighted by him and a total drift but I'm sure Ian would not mind me posting it. Came btw at a time I found I was dating someone with a boyfriend in prison, a highly emotional time! Remember a time a not so long ago You could't say goodbye now you can't say hello. So I'll pick up the glass and I'll pour out some wine And say what shall we drink to to tonight. What shall we drink to tonight What shall we drink to tonigt I'll drink to the lassie who should have been mine That's what I'll drink to tonight Now that your gone these things I recall The way that you smiled, the best smile of all So I'll pick up the glass and I'll pour me some wine And say what shall we drink tonight What shall we drink to tonight What shall we drink to tonight I'll drink till the landlady calls that its time That's what I'll drink tonight. Now that I've heard that youve found someone new It could have been me if it was't for you So I'll pick up the glass and I'll pour me some wine And say what shall we drink to tonight What shall we drink to tonight What shall we drink to tonight I'll drink to this bottle is empty and dry That's what we'll drink to tonight What shall we drink to tonight What shall we drink to tonight I'l drink to the lassie who should have been mine That's what I'll drink to tonight.

I'm breking my own rules of trying to keep threads reasonably clean and on topic but can't resist linking to the tune I wrote for Jayne - Hope this works. It is on MC MIDIs but MC seems to be down at the moment

This Bodleian Broadside could well be the original words which, as we know, tend to change over time Fall of Leaves Ballads: 1. Fall of leaves ("As I was walking early in the morning breeze ...") Printer: Swindells, J. (Manchester) Date: between 1796 and 1853

It may be you accidentally ticked 'abcpost'. Since the ABC notation can use greater-than and less-than signs there is a conflict with HTML. If this is ticked, those signs are treated as literal text, not HTML instructions.
