Must I then, must I then, Leave this little town, little_ town, And you, my dear, stay here? If I come, if I come, If I come back again, come back again, To you I'll rush, my dear. If I cannot always be right near, Still your love's my joy, I swear; If I come, if I come, If I come back again, come back again, To you I'll rush my dear. How you cry, how you cry, When I have to go, I have to go, As if our love was through. Even though, even though Many girls are around, girls are around To you dear love, I'll be true. Do not think that when I see some girl That my love is gone for you. Even though, even though Many girls are around, girls are around To you, dear love, I'll be true. By next year, by next year, When the grapes are ripe, grapes are ripe, I'll come back and settle down; If I'm then, if I'm then, Your sweetheart still, sweetheart still, We'll get married in this town. By next year, that's when my time is up, Then you you alone I'll be bound, If I'm then, if I'm then, Your sweetheat still, sweetheart still We'll get married in this town. Source: Singing Together, Spring 1976, BBC Publications Notes: Although no information is given in the pamphlet, this is from the German folk song. One version of the German lyrics is given below: 1. Mu? i' denn, mu? i' denn Zum St¤dtele hinaus, St¤dtele hinaus Und du mein Schatz bleibst hier Wenn i' komm', wenn i' komm', Wenn i' wiederum, wiederum komm', Kehr i' ei' mei' Schatz bei dir |: Kann i' glei' net allweil bei dir sei' Han' i' doch mei' Freud' an dir Wenn i' komm', wenn i' komm', Wenn i' wiederum, wiederum komm', Kehr' i' ei' mei' Schatz bei dir. :| 2. Wenn du weinst, wenn du weinst, Da? i' wandere mu?, Wandere mu?, Wie wenn d'Lieb jetzt w¤r vorbei Sind au' drau?, sind au' drau?, Der M¤dele viel, M¤dele viel Lieber Schatz, i' bleib dir treu. |: Denk du nett wenn i' a and're seh No sei mei Lieb' vorbei Sind au' drau?, sind au' drau?, Der M¤dele viel, M¤dele viel Lieber Schatz, i' bleib dir treu. :| 3. ?bers Jahr, ¼bers Jahr, Wenn mer Tr¤ubele schneidt, Tr¤ubele schneidt, Stell i' hier mi' wiedrum ei' Bin i' dann, bin i' dann, Dei' Sch¤tzele no', Sch¤tzele no' So soll die Hochzeit sei. |: ?bers Jahr do ischt mei' Zeit vorbei Do g'h¶r i' mei und dei Bin i' dann, bin i' dann, Dei' Sch¤tzele no', Sch¤tzele no' So soll die Hochzeit sei. :| I was going to pass some comments on the singabilty of this translation - but you can form your own opinions! This was published in 1976, twelve years after the Elvis Presley release of "Wooden Heart" which was itself a re-release of the 1961 Joe Dowell version. It is certain that the compilers of the booklet would be aware of those when they selected this song for inclusion in the booklet, but we can only speculate on what motives they had for chosing this.

Elvis recorded "Wooden Heart" on 27/28 April 1960, and it was featured in the film GI Blues which was released in 1960, so if Joe Dowell recorded a version in 1961 that would be the cover.

That's what comes of skimming web information. I read this at one site - "RCA [in the US] didn't release Elvis' version until 1964, which it only made it to #102 on the charts" - and did not take account of that fact that it was available elsewhere, in particular by RCA in the UK and on the soundtrack of GI Blues. |
